I got accepted to complete my final semester at the University of Amsterdam!
I can't believe how quickly grad school has gone. At the same time, it's been forever. I'm only applying to one American PhD program -- the Rhetoric, Scientific & Technical Writing program at the University of Minnesota. I like Minneapolis and St. Paul, and I'll have the opportunity to be around my sister as she goes through some tremendous years (10-14).
I've always imagined grad school to be a place where you really come to know and understand ideas. Actually get smarter. I have to some extent -- but I'm still a complete idiot. I used to be impressed with meeting someone with a graduate degree, but now I know that just like with any program and degree -- there are people who get by via means that I don't really approve of. Get by without ever learning anything about anything. Get by without caring. Get by. It really only represents a desire to either truly get better at something, a drive to make more money, or (per typical college experience) fufilling some expectation that is deemed necessary for some other pursuit in life. Some are just as apathetic about the whole thing as they've ever been. I wish it wasn't like that. I still believe in it completely, though. I'm not alone.
I'm not any better, but I believe I'm here for reasons that might be called the 'right' ones. I'm trying to accumulate skills, deepen and enrich my thought processes, and in the meantime become better at imparting that knowledge to others.
So I look forward to this opportunity at the University of Amsterdam. Their Argumentation research program has been named the best in the world, and their influence on the concept(s) of pragmadialectics is incredible. It won't be easy, but I hope to find time to experience more than just the academia while I'm there. I'm trying to not get completely drained at this whole thing. 10 years of school is a lot, any way you look at it.

i like being in grad school, i do.
but holy shit i have no life.
instead of being broke and going out all the time anyway,
i never get to go out but have money to spend for once.

i feel like chopping off a finger and replacing it with a highlighter, because all i do is read and read and read and read. i am a slow reader.

a sigma nu bro tried to steal an exam when i administered a test today! but i caught him and shamed him with my urine.

i have been a vegetarian for six weeks now. i know that isn't very long but the first weeks of breaking strong habits are the hardest, aren't they? honestly it wasn't that hard though. i just bought fake meat instead. which sort of feels like cheating?

i have been thinking of some people i haven't seen and miss. jen, mollie. i have been thinking of people i see far too infrequently. kristin, erica, lolly. i have been thinking of people that i see infrequently anyway but would like to see more of. amanda, louis. i have been thinking of people, i have.

positive things are happening. i really do love my house and living in east austin.
my top ten reasons for loving living in austin right now:
1. the grocery shopping.
2. the greenbelts.
3. the bars.
4. the coffee shops.
5. the movie options (i love video, alamo drafthouse, etc)
6. the restaurants.
7. the secret swimholes (diving cliffs included).
8. the bikes.
9. that i can go places alone (which i frequently do) and not feel lonely or creepy.
10. the skyline and city itself, as in, spending time in new parts of the city.

at the last minute, laura and i decided to buy a keg of shiner and host a graduation party in san marcos. i didn't get around to remembering to invite everyone - i didn't even get there myself until 11 or so. in any case, it happened. i apologize if i forgot to call.
last week i was in kansas. this weekend i am in minneapolis. on monday i will be in chicago. by thursday i will be back in austin. i have to resume TA duties & grad school stuff on january 8thish... so if we are to hang, let us do so before then.
be advised: i will have an xbox 360 with guitar hero III & halo III so i may not actually LOOK at you while we hang, but we can still hang.

i don't have a real before, but basically she was like this but with super shitty different wheels and a black seat. we just put these wheels on temporarily that day.
